Orientation Day kicks off college year Aug. 31

Port Alberni Campus

NIC’s Port Alberni campus will welcome for new and returning students as they embark on new studies and careers.

Orientation Day takes place Thursday, Aug. 31 and offers students the chance to get a head start on the school year.

Returning student Sheldon Falk said Orientation Day workshops gave him the chance to meet instructors and get a breakdown on course material. Even better, they were a chance to form connections with other students that continued long past first year.

“You start to identify people who are in your classes, you start recognizing faces and meeting people who you can maybe build friendships with, whether you have the same classes or not,” Falk said.

The start of the school year comes at an exciting time for the college and for the Port Alberni campus, including the first intake of the Community Mental Health Worker program in partnership with the Nuu-chah-nulth Tribal Council.

Orientation Day runs from 10 am to 1:30 pm and will include a barbeque lunch, activities and prizes. The event is also a chance for students to become acquainted with instructors and the resources available to them on campus.

“We want to bring new and returning students together with faculty, staff and community members in an action-packed day that will kick off the new academic year,” said Jessie Broekhuizen, administrative and operational support assistant for NIC’s Port Alberni campus.

Students are also invited back to campus on Sept. 5 for a ‘Prepare for Class’ session featuring workshops on budgeting, study tips, library orientation and other topics.

Classes begin on Sept. 6, but registration is available for prospective students until Sept. 14.
